The Process
How mediation works
Mediation is simpler than most people expect. There are six straightforward stages, and you are never committed to more than the next one.
- 1
Initial inquiry
You contact Cornerstone Mediation Services by phone, email, the inquiry form, or by booking a consultation. There is no obligation at this stage.
- 2
Introductory discussion
Dr. Akingbemi explains how mediation works, answers your questions, and considers with you whether mediation may be a suitable route for the situation.
- 3
Intake information
Where appropriate, parties may be asked to provide further information about the dispute, the people involved, any relevant background, and what they hope to achieve.
- 4
Agreement to mediate
Before mediation begins, the parties agree to the process — including confidentiality, the mediator's impartiality, voluntary participation, and respectful communication.
- 5
Mediation session
Each party has the opportunity to be heard. Dr. Akingbemi facilitates constructive dialogue, helps clarify the real issues, and supports the parties in exploring possible solutions.
- 6
Resolution and next steps
If agreement is reached, the key points can be recorded in writing. The aim is a practical, durable outcome that helps everyone move forward.
Mediation is voluntary and generally confidential. The Agreement to Mediate explains the confidentiality arrangements and any applicable exceptions. The mediator does not take sides, provide legal advice, or impose a decision.
